Rev. David G. Atkinson is a native of Jacksonville, Florida. Early in childhood, his family moved to West Tennessee, where he was raised by his grandparents. He graduated from Halls High School in 1978. David holds undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Sociology from Lambuth College in Jackson, Tennessee. He also attended The Divinity School at Duke University, where he earned a Masters of Divinity degree.
David responded to the call to ordained ministry at the age of nineteen. He has served churches in North Carolina, Kansas, West Tennessee and Kentucky. At his most recent appointment, David has served Benton 1st UMC for the past eleven years.
David has been married for 26 years to the former Susan Allsop, of Memphis, Tennessee. Susan is also a pastor in the United Methodist Church serving the Piperton-New Bethel charge. They have three grown children: Christopher (Chris), a graduate of Marshall County High School and Professional Driver for Knight Transportation; Stephen, a graduate of Missouri Southern and nursing student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center; and John Michael, a graduate of Marshall County High School and a special needs adult with a seizure disorder.
